Bringing the Second Line North: New Breed Brass Band to Play The Top Hat

Opening for names like The Fray, Red Baraat, and Trombone Short & New Orleans Ave, the up-and-coming New Breed Brass Band will play The Top Hat on Aug 19th. The eight piece, second-line* inspired ensemble is working “to be the next heavyweight contender among internationally known New Orleans brass bands.”

Fun fact: second-line refers to a style of music that stems from traditional New Orleans jazz. A band playing in the parade, the main line, would be followed by parade-goers who would follow the bands in line (the second) to continue enjoying the music

New Orleans based, many of the group’s members met each other at Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp. Though a majority of the group is in their twenties, they have been playing since the toddler years around New Orleans greats. These include highly-acclaimed musical family members who provided an inspiring environment. For instance, Jenard Andrews is the son of James “R” Andrews and nephew of Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews. Jenard expresses

“We bring outside influences like Earth Wind & Fire and Brass Construction, trying to interpret a different song for every genre, and make it all our own sound.”

Emerging in 2013, the band is working on a new album of original material. The lineup consists of three trumpets, two trombones, a saxophone, a tuba and a bass drum. A big band that is guaranteed to pack a big sound.

Tickets are on sale now and are available online, over the phone at (877) 987-6487, or at The Top Hat box office in downtown Missoula.
