Polyrhythmics’ 2017 release, Caldera, Showcases the tight grooves and virtuosic musicianship of the instrumental eight-piece. The album name stems from their time songwriting during a band retreat near Oregon’s Mt. Hood, a potentially active volcano.

Caldera’s sound ranges from downtempo Afrobeat to explosive funk to psychedelic rock, exhibiting the band’s diverse musical taste. Joe Gatto, of All About Jazz, gave the album 4.5 out of 5 stars saying, “Caldera is one of my favorite records of 2017 because of its genre-bending jams, and refusal to conform to easy classification.”

Polyrhythmics have drawn influences from artists like Fela Kuti, James Brown, Budos Band, Miles Davis, Michael Jackson, and Talking Heads.
