Hiss Golden Messenger is the brainchild of M.C. Taylor. Taylor, calls up a wide spectrum of American vernacular music — from Archie Brownlee to the Staple Singers, and from singer-songwriters Van Morrison to Townes Van Zandt.

He formed the project shortly after relocating from California to North Carolina in 2007 and started his his initial recordings with only his voice and guitar recorded to a cheap cassette recorder. He’s since developed a more polished and well rounded approach to recording, now incorporating other elements like horns, strings and choirs. Their debut album Country Hai East Cotton was released on the band’s label Heaven & Earth Magic Recording Co. in 2009.

Fast forward to present day and HGM has released several more albums, but most recently a four-LP box set called Devotion: Songs About Rivers and Spirits and Children. It includes reissues of three previously released albums — 2010’s Bad Debt, 2011’s Poor Moon and 2013’s Haw — and a new rarities compilation, Virgo Fool. Rolling Stone says “the new set offers a look at how he’s [M.C. Taylor] evolved from a lonesome, lo-fi troubadour to the leader of a dynamic groove-based band.
