Rainbow Kitten Surprise Announces Concert at KettleHouse Amphitheater with Houndmouth
North Carolina’s red hot indie rock band, Rainbow Kitten Surprise, will return to Montana… this time for an outdoor summer concert at KettleHouse Amphitheater on Saturday, July 16, 2022 with support from Houndmouth.
In 2018, Rainbow Kitten Surprise became one of just a few bands to originally be booked for a show at the Top Hat in Missoula, but sell out so quickly that we had to move the show to The Wilma. That in itself is an impressive feat, but then Rainbow Kitten Surprise went on to sell out The Wilma! So here we are four years later and Rainbow Kitten Surprise have graduated to the majestic KettleHouse Amphitheater on the beautiful banks of the Blackfoot River.
Just in case you didn’t realize, this show is on Saturday in mid July, so you’re in for what should be a gorgeous night at the Amp. Not to mention we have alt-folk rock band Houndmouth getting the fun started, so it’s going to be a night packed full of good tunes.

Nearly every Rainbow Kitten Surprise song unfolds in a dizzying rush of words, feverish yet finespun lyrics that feel both intimate as confession and mythic as a fable. Throughout their album How To: Friend, Love, Freefall, the Nashville based five-piece set those lyrics to a thrillingly unpredictable sound that transcends all genre convention, endlessly changing form to accommodate their constant shifts in mood and spirit. But while Rainbow Kitten Surprise push into some complex emotional terrain, the band’s joyful vitality ultimately makes for an album that’s deeply cathartic and undeniably life-affirming.
Produced by Grammy Award-winner Jay Joyce (Cage The Elephant, The Head and the Heart, FIDLAR) and recorded at Neon Cross Studio in Nashville, How To: Friend, Love, Freefall marks Rainbow Kitten Surprise’s debut release for Elektra Records. In creating the album, the band immersed themselves in a deliberate sonic exploration that made heavy use of the studio’s treasure trove of vintage instruments, infusing their music with the kinetic energy of discovery.
