Trampled by Turtles Confirm Concerts at The ELM and KettleHouse Amphitheater in 2023

Minnesota-based bluegrass mainstay Trampled by Turtles will return to Montana for two concerts in 2023, performing at The ELM in Bozeman on July 19th, and outdoors along the banks of the Blackfoot River at KettleHouse Amphitheater on July 20th. Both concerts will feature support from neofolk artist Amigo the Devil, and the Bozeman concert will include an extra opening set from Chester Floyd with Carl Hansen.

Trampled by Turtles has played at the KettleHouse Amphitheater several times before and they always bring in a big crowd (see photos). Since forming in 2003, they’ve toured all over the world, continuously building their fanbase through highly energetic performances. In addition to major bluegrass and folk festivals, they’ve performed at Coachella, Bonnaroo, and Lollapalooza, among others.

While they’re not touring, Trampled stays busy in the studio, having released their 10th full-length album, Alpenglow, in 2022. The album hit #1 on the Billboard Bluegrass Chart and No Depression called it “an artfully curated listening experience that lives up to the band’s live performances.”

As mentioned, Trampled will be supported by Amigo the Devil, an Austin, TX-based artist who combines elements of folk, country, and even some metal. The Bozeman show will also feature an opening performance from Chester Floyd with Carl Hansen.

Chester and Carl both live in Bozeman and work with popular outdoorsman Steve Rinella on the Meat Eater podcast. Trampled by Turtles guitarist Dave Simonett was actually featured on the podcast several years back. Another fun fact — Carl is the bassist for local band, STiLGONE! It should be fun seeing them on the same stage 🙂

About Trampled by Turtles

Trampled by Turtles are from Duluth, Minnesota, where frontman Dave Simonett initially formed the group as a side project in 2003. At the time, Simonett had lost most of his music gear, thanks to a  group of enterprising car thieves who’d ransacked his vehicle while he played a show with his previous band.

Left with nothing more than an acoustic guitar, he began piecing together a new band, this time taking inspiration from bluegrass, folk, and other genres that didn’t rely on amplification. Simonett hadn’t played any bluegrass music before, and he filled his lineup with other newcomers to the genre, including fiddler Ryan Young (who’d previously played drums in a speed metal act) and bassist Tim Saxhaug. Along with mandolinist Erik Berry and banjo player Dave Carroll, the group began carving out a fast, frenetic sound that owed as much to rock & roll as bluegrass.
