SUPPORT ANNOUNCEMENT: Oh Rose to Open for Future Islands
Olympia-based experimental folk-rock group Oh Rose will provide support for Future Islands at The Wilma on Sept 27th. Missoula should be ready for an experimental journey that combines dreamy, psychedelic surf rock with a post-punk grit and energy.
The four piece ensemble, together since 2014, is comprised of Olivia Rose (vocals/guitar), Liam Hindahl (drums), Kevin Christopher (bass), and Sarah Redden (synth). Their most recent album Seven, has a dexterous sound coming from divergent influences on the individual musicians. Sounds range from upbeat indie to lo-fi pop punk, to more mournful shoe gaze.
Members Kevin and Liam are both trained audio-engineers. With songs from Olivia (some originating from a pre-Oh Rose era) the rest of the members added their own to the mix in an Olympia house studio. Each a talented musician in their own way, the arrangements are innovative and the lyrics, witty.
When Olivia was asked what fans can expect from the show, the singer responded with
“Temporary Tofurky Tats and becoming our boy/girl/whatever friend.”
The singer’s voice yields a darker raw emotion that is sometimes lost at the dreamier depths of experimental-indie. Her range in addition to her ability to scream (yes, like a metal vocalist—see “Seven”), takes a simple garage-band to the next level. The spooky result has been self-labeled “meatwave” and “darkrock.” Such a performance definitely caters to that special brand of Missoula Weird.
