As if the silky croon of Rachael Price’s voice wasn’t enough to get you to The Wilma on August 22nd, avant-pop group Cuddle Magic has just been announced for support.
With heavy instrumentation from highly talented musicians, the group was thrown into the genre of chamber pop after the release of Info Nympho. Developing their sound, the musicians imbedded the “heady compositional devices” deeper into the timbre of their tracks.
Though Missoula, Montana may not be familiar with this group of talented musicians, based in Brooklyn, NY, they are highly-acclaimed within the avant-garde scene in New York City. Collaborations include musical work with the likes of Beyonce, Amanda Palmer (Dresden Dolls), and Will Sheff (Okkervil River).
Gaining even larger amounts of recognition, the band played the Delpozo fashion show in 2014 during New York Fashion Week, because designer, Josep Font “was a fan on their quirky tunes” (elle.com). Though more electronic and less soul than Lake Street dive, both ensembles are comprised of some of the most talented and classically trained musicians of today.
Ashes/Axis, Cuddle Magic’s most recent studio album, exercises whimsical arrangements with jazz, classical, electronic, and indie dream-pop influences. Of a similar thread as the Dirty Projectors and Perfume Genius, showing up early to hear the future with their avant-pop would be more than worth your while.
Quick Fact: Formed between Brooklyn and Philadelphia, though now based in Brooklyn. Members include Benjamin Lazar Davis, Christopher McDonald, Dave Flaherty, Alec Spiegelman, Kristin Slipp and Cole Kamen-Green: you will have plenty to look at!
Tickets for Lake Street Dive & Cuddle Magic at The Wilma August 22 are still available at The Top Hat in downtown Missoula, online, and by calling 877-987-6487. More information on the performance can be found here.
