New Orleans Brings All-Star Lineup to KettleHouse Amphitheater
On September 11, 2018, the musical spirit of New Orleans will make its way to KettleHouse Amphitheater for Trombone Shorty’s Voodoo Threauxdown. The NOLA -inspired lineup features a headlining performance from Grammy nominee Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, with equally impressive support from Galactic, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and New Breed Brass Band. The show will also feature special guest appearances from Big Easy legends Cyril Neville, Walter “Wolfman” Washington, and Kermit Ruffins.
Galactic has become a favorite in Missoula, headlining the Top Hat and The Wilma multiple times while gaining a loyal following with their unique brand of modern funk fusion music. They’ve headlined several festivals and have toured extensively — sharing the stage with acts such as Allman Brothers, Widespread Panic, The Roots, Jack Johnson, The Revivalists and plenty others.
Preservation Hall Jazz Band was originally formed in the 1960s in association with the historic Preservation Hall located in the French Quarter of New Orleans. In 2006, they were awarded the National Medal of Arts, the nation’s highest honor for artistic excellence. To this day, they continue to carry on the spirit of traditional NOLA jazz music.
New Breed Brass Band, as their name suggests, infuses funk, rock, jazz, and hip-hop into a custom-made enhancement of second-line brass band tradition. They’re working to become the next heavyweight in the brass scene and it doesn’t look like they’re too far from that, as Trombone Shorty stated “These kids take the music and the ethos seriously. They get it. The way I see it, the future of the New Orleans brass band tradition is in their hands. I really believe that.”
Cyril Neville, Walter “Wolfman” Washinton, and Kermit Ruffins are staples in the NOLA scene. Cyril was a lead vocalist in The Meters and The Neville Brothers, which formed in the 1970s. Wolfman is a master blues guitarist who’s been playing since the early 60s. He played with Johnny Adams in the early 70s, and later started his own band, the Roadmasters, before eventually releasing music as a solo musician. Kermit Ruffins is vocalist and trumpeter who cofounded Rebirth Brass Band, which revolutionized the brass band community and bolstered the rejuvenation of the New Orleans second-line culture that now flourishes. He’s also been featured on the HBO Series Treme, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Bravo’s Top Chef and on the soundtrack to Disney’s Jungle Book with Bill Murray and Christopher Walken.
The Voodoo Threauxdown is a tricentennial celebration of New Orleans 300th Anniversary and is a tribute to its rich cultural heritage and famed signature sound. The all-star lineup will be a true treat to have on the banks of the Blackfoot River. Montana is lucky enough to be one of 17 states the tour will be stopping through on their 27-show excursion.
