This Week in Concerts: November 14th thru November 20th

We have a busy week ahead — complete with local music, a film, big concerts at the Wilma, Turkey Bingo and more!

Take a look at this week’s lineup below.

Friday, November 15th
Hippo Campus at the Wilma

Hippo Campus is a band from St. Paul, Minnesota. Formed in 2013, prior to graduating from performing arts high school, the band started on a break out trajectory following a series of talked-about performances at SXSW. This was immediately followed by their network television debut on Conan. They’ve since risen to the forefront of their genre on the backs of relentless touring and the strength of their debut album ‘landmark’.

In October 2017, the band released their self-produced EP ‘warm glow’ as an ode to loyalty and self-preservation. “We had tunes that didn’t fit on ‘landmark’ but took on a life of their own. The project became about the support we couldn’t find as individuals but discovered as an entity.” The band’s sophomore release, ‘Bambi’ was released on September 28th, 2018.

Friday, November 15th
The Ghost of Paul Revere at the Top Hat

“We grew up listening to Radiohead and the Beatles and Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd,” says Griffin Sherry, guitarist/singer in The Ghost Of Paul Revere. “Everyone assumed we were a bluegrass band because we were playing these traditional instruments, but we weren’t writing traditional music. We were just writing songs with the instruments we had.” Call-and-response melodies, sing-along hooks, and densely layered harmonies — those are a few ways The Ghost of Paul Revere describes their self labeled genre of “holler folk.”

Their work has earned them much praise. The Boston Globe raved that they “create the type of music for which festivals are made,” while No Depression said they “prove that superior roots music can come from anywhere,” and Dispatch Magazine wrote that they possess not only “the chops, but the heart to reach their audience and leave an undeniable impression.”

The band debuted their red dirt sound on 2008’s Road Of Life, but it was their 2011 follow-up Firewater that earned them the #1 position on the Texas Music Charts. In 2014, they released Early Morning Shakes, which broke into the Top 10 on the Billboard Country Chart, a testament to their rigorous DIY work ethic and endless supply of passion and drive. Esquire called them “the real damn deal,” while Country Weekly said they combine “greasy Southern rock riffs with countrified songwriting and Texas grit for something wholly unique,” and Playboy dubbed them “the new bad boys of country music.”

Released in 2016, their most recent album, Mud, finds the band scaling new heights of songwriting and musicianship, with searing guitars, soulful vocals, and indelible hooks. For the recording sessions, the band’s five founding members—Cody Cannon on lead vocals and guitar, Cody Tate and John Jeffers on guitars, Gary Brown on bass, and Jeff Hogg on drums—fleshed out their sound with the addition of fiddler/keyboard player Jon Knudson and percussionist Tony Kent, who are both now full-time members.
