Abby Webster is a singer-songwriter whose music resonates with authenticity and wit. Her songs are a blend of rich imagery and accessible storytelling, capturing both the humor and poignancy of life’s moments, whether grand or mundane. Her lyrical style is deeply genuine, making her a distinctive voice in the contemporary music scene.
Webster began writing and releasing music as a side project in 2008, crafting songs characterized by confessional lyrics and piano-driven melodies. After graduating college with a degree in philosophy, she continued to write poetry and music but never seriously considered pursuing a professional music career. Despite a lifelong passion for writing, it wasn’t until she picked up the guitar at age 27 that her music took a different direction.
On a whim, Webster released her boot-stomping anthem “Tall Boy,” never expecting it to go beyond her circle of friends. But the song, written and recorded in her San Francisco bedroom as a lighthearted joke, unexpectedly caught fire, amassing millions of streams and stunning the artist who had never intended it to see the light of day.
In 2023, Webster was slated to perform solo at Red Ants Pants Music Festival in White Sulphur Springs, Montana. Nervous about taking the stage alone, she quickly assembled a four-piece band with friends. Their performance led to a win in the side stage competition, and the group soon evolved into a six-piece ensemble, calling themselves Abby Webster and her Imaginary Band. Since then, they’ve recorded an album, sold out shows across Montana, and are gearing up for a tour in 2025.
Based in Bozeman, MT, Abby Webster and her Imaginary Band fuse the region’s cherished bluegrass and folk traditions with indie rock and honky-tonk influences. Their diverse sonic palette, combined with their exceptional musicianship, creates enchanting performances that showcase a truly authentic sound. Their debut album, Livin’ by the Water, released on August 17th, 2024, was produced and recorded at Free River Studios in Livingston. The album celebrates the sublimity of the natural world, telling stories that are heartbreaking, hilariously human, and deeply moving.
