About the event
The Equus International Film Festival brings award winning horse films back to the Wilma, Sunday, September 14 th with filmmakers and special presenters.
We open Equus International on Sunday with “Throw Away Horses.” This documentary sheds light on a mostly unknown epidemic, thousands of horses caught every year in a trap of human neglect, despair, and greed. From horse racing to breeders, to the individual owner, when a horse is seen as merely a tool or commodity, there is little legal protection or resources for the unwanted horse. We follow the stories of brave horses and courageous people working to save them and bring about community and governmental change.
We then switch gears to a story of hope and resilience with “Rescued Hearts,” a powerful documentary that explores the profound and often miraculous connection
between humans and horses.
Inspired by a life-changing moment—when a 7-year-old boy diagnosed with autism spoke his first words while interacting with a horse—filmmakers Dana Croschere and Krisanna Sexton set out to uncover the deeper meaning behind this extraordinary bond.
Through deeply moving personal stories, expert insights, and research, Rescued Hearts explores how horses serve as catalysts for healing and transformation, helping us open our hearts and reconnect with our authentic selves. The film not only highlights lives forever changed through these experiences but also reveals a profound truth: healing is never one-sided.
Discussion follows each film and then the closing keynote with Temple.
