About the Magpies

Magpies are an indie rock, post grunge band from Missoula, Montana and have drawn comparisons to bands like Sonic Youth, Pixies and, “B-52’s meets Yo La Tengo”.

Since leasing their first demo in 2007-The Diablo Highway Sessions, they have continued to record and consistently tour for the past decade. Releasing Pica Pica in 2009, Pretty Big Time in 2012, a 2014 7” split with VTO,  2015’s Tornado and most recently Annex in early 2017.

The band was founded by husband/wife duo Tolan Harber- guitar, vocals and Samantha Pollington- bass, vocals. Rounding out the rest of the band is Hank Donovan on guitar and Aaron Soria on drums.

MASS FM

MASS FM at the top hat

MASS FM is (arguably) Missoula’s best dad band. MASS FM plays groove-heavy post-punk and counts Fugazi, INXS, Queens of the Stone Age and Steely Dan among their many, many collective influences (but please don’t bring it up, Steely Dan is highly contentious). MASS FM is Chris, Christopher, Doug and Ryan. MASS FM will release a 4-song EP of new songs this spring (which might have a Mu chord or two).

Jupiter Beat

Jupiter Beat at the top hat

The Missoula five-piece, Jupiter Beat, is comprised of several Missoula music veterans and one relative newcomer, offering listeners a psychedelic genre-bending new sound culminating into one of the best live shows in town. The band includes singer/songwriter Ross Watkins, guitarist John Sporman, drummer Matt Olson, bassist Hiram Mariner, and Ben Weiss on synth.

Described as “The Talking Heads meet the B-52s tossed in a blender” from “Marillion meets Beefheart to perform a f**ked up high school musical,” Jupiter Beat promises to deliver unique, layered, and textured sounds unlike anything you’ve experienced on stage.

The group is currently recording their first album and can be found frequently touring the Missoula music scene with plans to expand to the Pacific Northwest over the summer. They make their Top Hat debut on May 24th.
