Directed by Tom Opre, The Real Yellowstone is a forthright new documentary that explores the real-life story of Montana’s rural ranching communities. Moving beyond Hollywood dramatizations, the film centers the voices of multigenerational ranchers, outfitters, and conservationists who navigate the shifting landscape of public policy, predator pressures, and real estate development in Central and North‑central Montana . Opre, originally known for documentaries on h uman rights in Zimbabwe and Highland traditions in Scotland, returns to his roots in Montana to capture an unfiltered, intimate account of those who live closest to the land.

The Real Yellowstone contemplates a critical question: “What if the last generation of American ranchers walked off the land?” It explores the tension between large-scale conservation efforts—such as those of American Prairie Reserve—and the rural communities striving to sustain generational ranching livelihoods. The documentary is both a tribute and a conversation starter, urging viewers to reassess what true conservation means when it intersects with people’s lives and economies.
