About Semper Sursum
We are SEMPER SURSUM, or “always aim high” in Latin. Our mission is to deliver music with a driving beat that invites as many people as possible to dance and engage in meaningful dialogue together. Our message is to empower individuals to overcome life’s adversities by being the best humans they can be. We’ve chosen to pull our influences from African-American blues, rock, R&B, and jazz, because these remain among the most original and influential art forms in the United States despite the long and continued struggle for black equality in this country. As white men wishing to play black music, we believe we can learn from the history of this struggle, and invite individuals of all backgrounds to learn from each other’s unique cultural experiences. The ancient Latin origins of our band name symbolizes these beliefs in an effort to challenge our listeners to seek new perspectives, to bravely face life’s challenges, to make the world a better place, and to always aim high.
